버마 군 관리들은 25일 오전 트럭을 타고 랑군 시내를 순찰하며 확성기를 통해 주민들에게 시위대에 접근하지 말 것을 경고했습니다.
버마의 종교 장관은 이보다 앞서 24일 버마 국영 방송에 출연해 시위에 참가하는 승려들에 대한 조치가 취해질 것이라고 경고했습니다.
Witnesses in Burma say tens of thousands of Buddhist monks and their supporters are
marching in Rangoon, despite warnings from the military government to stop their
pro-democracy demonstrations.
Observers say a huge procession of orange-robed monks and civilians are marching
through downtown Rangoon carrying banners and chanting pro-democracy slogans.
Witnesses say some of the demonstrators are carrying the "fighting peacock" flag, the
emblem of the student unions that led a mass uprising in 1988. The army crushed that
rebellion, killing an estimated three-thousand people.
Earlier today (Tuesday), military officials circled Rangoon in trucks with loudspeakers
warning people to stay away from the demonstrations.
On Monday, the government warned the monks to stay out of politics. The Burmese
religious affairs minister (Brigadier General Thura Myint Maung) threatened on state
television to take action against the protesting monks.
