버마 당국은 20여년만에 버마 최대의 반정부 시위를 이끈 불교승들에 대해 적절한 조치를 취할 것이라고 위협했습니다.

이같은 마웅 장관의 경고는 최근 버마 전역에서 불교승들에 의해 계속 확산되는 반정부시위에 대한 정부의 첫 공식 반응입니다.
시위와 집회를 철저히 통제하는 버마의 군사통치하에서 10만명의 군중이 운집한 것은 수백명의 사상자를 낸 88년 민주화운동 이후 최대 규모입니다.
유엔과 유럽연합, 미국은 각각 성명을 발표하고 버마 군사정부의 자제를 촉구하고, 정부 지도자들과 민주화운동가들간의 평화적인 대화를 통한 개혁을 축구했습니다.
반기문 유엔 사무총장은 버마에서 계속되는 시위가 평화적으로 진행된 것에 찬사를 보내고, 군사정부에 대해 자제를 촉구했습니다.
반 총장은 이날, 미셸 몬타스 대변인을 통해 발표한 성명을 통해 시위대가 데모를 하면서 평화적인 방법을 선택한 것에 찬사를 보내며, 버마 정부에 대해서도 앞으로도 계속 자제해 줄 것을 촉구한다고 말했습니다.
한편 티베트의 정신적 지도자 달라이 라마는 버마의 평화적인 민주화 운동을 이끌고 있는 승려들의 시위를 지지한다고 밝혔습니다.
달라이 라마는 24일, 파리 소재 망명정부 사무소를 통해 발표한 성명에서, 최근 버마의 민주화운동을 전폭적으로 지지하며, 그들과의 연대를 확인한다고 말했습니다.
달라이 라마는 또한 이번 기회에 전세계의 자유를 사랑하는 사람들에게 이같은 비폭력운동을 지지해 줄 것을 호소했습니다.
달라이 라마는 현재 가택연금중인 버마의 민주화 지도자이며 노벨 평화상 수상자인 아웅산 수지 여사의 조기 석방을 기도를 드리자고 제의했습니다.

Burmese officials have threatened to take action against Buddhist monks leading the country's largest anti-government protests in nearly 20 years.
The religious affairs minister, Brigadier General Thura Myint Maung, broadcast the warning on state television today (Monday) after monks led some 100-thousand people on a peaceful pro-democracy march through the streets of Rangoon.
The general's statement is the first official reaction to the escalating protests against the country's military rulers.
The United Nations, the European Union and the United States each issued statements today (Monday) calling for restraint by Burma's government and urging reform through peaceful national dialogue between the country's leaders and pro-democracy activists.
They also praised the peaceful nature of the demonstrations, which began last month over fuel prices, but have become a general protest against Burma's repressive military leadership.
Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has offered his support for Burma's Buddhist monks who are leading a peaceful movement for democracy in Burma.
In a statement, the Dalai Lama said today (Monday) he fully supports the Burmese call for freedom and democracy.
He appealed to practicing Buddhists among Burma's military rulers to act in accordance with the sacred non-violent and compassionate teachings of their faith.
The Buddhist clergyman also offered prayers for the early release from house arrest of Burma's pro-democracy leader, and fellow Nobel peace laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi.
The Dalai Lama is among a growing number of world leaders and dignitaries voicing support for the Burmese demonstrators.
