Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori has been extradited to Peru to face charges of corruption and human rights abuse.

Peruvian state television says the plane carrying the 69-year-old former president arrived in the southern Peruvian city of Tacna today (Saturday), on its way to Lima. Mr. Fujimori had been in Chile since 2005 and was flown to Peru from Santiago early today.

Chile's Supreme Court ruled Friday that he must be sent back to Peru, saying it had agreed to seven of the 13 charges filed by Peruvian prosecutors against him.

Prosecutors in Peru accuse Mr. Fujimori of corruption and sanctioning the killing of 25 people by paramilitary squads during his decade-long presidency, which ended in 2000. He has denied the charges.

The former president had not been back to Peru since the collapse of his government. He spent five years in exile in his ancestral homeland of Japan, then moved to Chile, where he was arrested.

He has spent the last two years fighting extradition.

Alberto Fujimori is remembered by his supporters as the man who led his country successfully through economic struggles and a high-profile hostage situation.

To his critics, he is a former leader who abused his power and authorized human rights abuses.

Fujimori, the son of Japanese immigrants to Peru, took over the presidency in 1990 from Alan Garcia and instituted radical economic reforms to slow inflation. He suspended the courts and the congress in 1992, declaring emergency rule to crack down on the Shining Path rebels.

In 1997, he won support for the handling of rebels who took control of the Japanese embassy residence in Lima for four months and held 72 hostages. All but one of the hostages were rescued and the rebels involved were killed.

In 2000, while embroiled in a bribery scandal, Fujimori fled the country for his ancestral homeland and faxed his resignation letter back to Lima. He lived in Japan for five years before declaring his intention to return to Peruvian politics and flying to Chile, where he was arrested.
