민주화단체인 버마 유엔 서비스사무소는 이날, 군인들이 최근 수주동안 평화적인 시위를 벌이는 수백명의 불교 승려들을 마구 구타하고 욕설을 퍼부었다고 밝혔습니다.
미국에 본부를 둔 버마 유엔사무소는 버마의 불교승들이 18일부터 가두시위 진압 관련자들에 항의하는 종교적 배척운동을 시작할 것이라고 말했습니다.
버마 군사정부는 지난 주에 불교승들이 반정부 항의시위에 가담하지 말라고 촉구했습니다.

Witnesses say at least 400 monks chanted prayers quietly today (Monday) as they walked through the streets of a central town (Kyaukpadaung) 650 kilometers north of Rangoon. No arrests were reported.
The pro-democracy group Burma U.N. Service Office said today (Monday) the military has beaten and insulted hundreds of peacefully demonstrating Buddhist monks in recent weeks. The chief of the U.S.-based group says the monks plan to begin a religious boycott Tuesday against anyone involved in the crackdown on the protesters.
The government last week urged Buddhist monks to stay away from anti-government protests.
Protests have erupted across Burma since the government doubled the price of fuel in August.
