Satellite photographs show the Arctic ice pack is melting 10 times more rapidly than usual this year, and the historically icebound Northwest Passage between Europe and Asia is now fully open.

The European Space Agency says images taken this month show one million square kilometers of open water where permanent sea ice previously blocked shipping lanes near northern Canada.

The Arctic ice pack has been shrinking steadily in recent years (at a rate of about 100 million square kilometers per year), but near the end of (the Northern Hemisphere) summer this year, ESA says, it is melting 10 times faster than usual, and is now 25 percent smaller than ever.

(An advanced radar system aboard the Envisat satellite measures the ice pack at three million square kilometers this year, ESA says, compared to about four million square kilometers in 2005 and 2006.)

The Northwest Passage, a fabled sea route that would dramatically shorten voyages from Europe to Asia, historically has been blocked by ice throughout the year, but the space agency says it is now fully open.
