The frontrunner to succeed Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he will not visit a war shrine seen by Japan's neighbors as a symbol of its past militarism.

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) veteran Yasuo Fukuda said today (Saturday) he will not visit the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo because it would anger China and South Korea.

Japan's relations with the two countries soured under the leadership of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, who made annual pilgrimages to the shrine which honors Japan's war dead, including convicted war criminals.

Fukuda also vowed to work with the opposition to renew legislation allowing Japan to support the U.S.-backed war effort in Afghanistan. The opposition is against the mission.

Fukuda will run against former Foreign Minister Taro Aso in a September 23rd election for leadership of the LDP. The winner will become Japan's prime minister, because the LDP controls the powerful lower house of parliament.
