중국에서 국가기밀 누설 혐의로 3년 전에 체포됐던 미국 뉴욕타임스 신문의 조사연구원 자오 얀 씨가 석방됐습니다.
자오 얀 씨는 지난 2004년에 장쩌민 당시 국가주석이 군사위 주석에서 곧 사임할 것이라고 뉴욕타임스가 보도한 후 체포됐습니다.
자오 씨는 국가기밀 누설 혐의로 기소됐지만, 법원은 증거 불충분으로 혐의를 기각했습니다. 대신 자오 씨는 전혀 관계가 없는 사기 혐의에 대해 유죄가 인정돼 3년 징역형을 선고받았습니다.
자오 씨는 뉴욕타임스 베이징 지국에 합류하기 이전에 중국 농촌지역의 문제들에 관해 보도했습니다.
인권 단체들은 자오 씨 사건은 언론인들을 위협하고 정부에 도전하는 사람들을 침묵시키기 위한 정치적 동기에 의한 것이라고 비판하고 있습니다.
A researcher for "The New York Times" newspaper has been released from a Chinese prison, three years after he was arrested for allegedly leaking state secrets.
Friends and family greeted Zhao Yan today (Saturday) as he left a detention center in Beijing.
The researcher was detained in 2004 after the newspaper reported the imminent retirement of then-President Jiang Zemin from his post as head of the country's armed forces. Mr. Jiang's retirement was a closely guarded secret at the time.
Zhao was charged with revealing state secrets, but a Chinese court later dropped the charges because of insufficient evidence. Instead, in 2006, Zhao was convicted of an unrelated charge of fraud and sentenced to three years in prison.
He denies the charges.
