The United Nations is warning that recent flooding in West Africa could lead to locust
infestations and outbreaks of waterborne illness in certain parts of the region.
A spokeswoman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says
more than a half-million people in 12 west African countries have been affected by heavy rains that have been falling for weeks. The spokeswoman (Elizabeth Byrs) says the stagnant water along with high temperatures create excellent breeding conditions for locusts.
She says Mali and Niger are particularly susceptible to the problem. Locusts can be
devastating to an area because they eat crops that cattle need, resulting in a widespread cycle of famine.
Flood waters have made access to locust-prone areas in the region difficult.
U.N. officials say they also are concerned about waterborne illnesses in Ghana, where
260-thousand people have been affected by flooding.
