Pakistani officials say a suicide bomber carried out the attack that killed 17 commandos at an army base dining hall on Thursday.
But military officials today (Friday) say they cannot verify who was behind the attack, citing an ongoing investigation. Unnamed army sources say militant groups, including al-Qaida, are considered to be suspects.
The military says 17 soldiers were killed and about 30 were wounded in the blast inside the military canteen in the town of Tarbela Ghazi, 70 kilometers northwest of the capital, Islamabad.
Elsewhere, in the northwestern tribal areas, the army says two soldiers were killed and six others are missing after heavy fighting Thursday with pro-Taleban militants. Officials say at least 50 militants were killed in the clashes (near the Afghan border).
Witnesses report higher death tolls, but casualty figures could not be confirmed.
Thursday's violence coincided with a visit to Islamabad by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte.
