이라크 경찰은 13일 압둘 사타르 아부 리샤와 경호원 2명이 라마디 알-안바르 지역 인근의 자택에서 발생한 폭탄 테러로 숨졌다고 밝혔습니다.
아부 리샤는 지난주에 이라크를 방문한 조지 부시 미국 대통령과도 만났던 인물입니다. 아부 리샤는 이라크 알 카에다에 대항하는 현지 부족 연맹을 이끌었습니다. 미국 지도자들도 앞서 이들 부족과의 협력을 이라크 치안 확보를 위한 중요한 성공으로 평가했었습니다.
미국 백악관 대변인은 이번 테러는 비열한 행위라며, 알 카에다에 맞서 계속 싸울 필요성이 있음을 보여줬다고 말했습니다. 미국 국방부 대변인도 아부 리샤의 죽음은 큰 손실이라며, 하지만 그가 주도한 움직임은 사후에도 계속될 것이라고 말했습니다.
한편 이라크 주둔 미군의 한 고위관리는 전 날 바그다드에 있는 미군 기지에 이라크 제 로켓 공격이 가해졌다고 말했습니다. 이 공격으로 1명이 숨지고 11명이 부상을 입었습니다.

A roadside bomb blast has killed a key Sunni Arab sheikh cooperating in the U.S.-led fight against al-Qaida in Iraq.
Iraqi police today (Thursday) said Abdul Sattar Abu Risha and two bodyguards died in an attack near the sheikh's home in the capital of al-Anbar province, Ramadi.
Abu Risha met with President Bush during his visit to Iraq last week. He was a leader of an alliance of tribal sheikhs in Anbar fighting al-Qaida in Iraq. U.S. leaders have said the alliance is a key success story in improving security in Iraq.
A White House spokeswoman (Dana Perino) denounced the killing as an "outrage," and said it showed the need to continue the fight against al-Qaida. A Pentagon spokesman (Geoff Morrell) called the sheikh's death a tragic loss, but said the movement he led will outlive him.
In other news, a senior U.S. military officer in Iraq says an Iranian-made rocket was used in an attack on a U.S. base near Baghdad two days ago that killed one person and wounded 11 others.
