일본 국회는 오늘(10일) 아프간내 일본 자위대 파병의 근거가 되는 테러대책특별조치법 연장안 여부를 결정하기 위해 특별회기를 소집했습니다. 일본 자위대는 현재 인도양에서 미 연합군 전함에 급유를 지원하는 등 후방 지원 역할을 담당하고 있습니다.
테러대책특별조치법은 지난 2001년 9.11 테러공격일 발생한 후 발효됐으며 오는 11월 1일 기한이 만료될 예정입니다. 최근 참의원 선거에서 다수당 위치를 장악한 민주당 등 야당은 테러대택특별조치법 연장안에 반대하고 있습니다.
아베 총리는 그러나 어제(9일) 국회가 아프가니스탄에 대한 일본의 임무기한을 연장하지 않을 경우 총리직 사퇴까지 불사하겠다고 경고했습니다.
아베 총리는 1년전 총리 취임 때 국제 안보에 대한 일본의 참여를 다짐하며 일본의 대외 군사활동을 강력히 규제하는 기존 반전 헌법의 개정을 시사한 바 있습니다.

Japan's parliament opened an extraordinary session today (Monday) to decide whether to renew a special anti-terrorism law enabling Japan's navy to refuel coalition warships in the Indian Ocean.
The law was enacted after the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, and is to expire November first. The opposition, which recently gained control of the Upper House of parliament, opposes the extension.
Mr. Abe indicated Sunday that he would resign if parliament does not extend Japan's mission in Afghanistan.
He took office a year ago vowing to boost Japan's participation in global security and to revise the country's pacifist constitution, which strictly limits Japan's military activities.
