미국은 현재 세계에서 단일국가로는 세계 식량 지원의 절반을 제공하는 세계 최대의 식량지원국가입니다. 이같은 식량원조의 주요 전달수단은 미국 국제개발처, USAID의 미국 국제개발처, USAID의 ‘평화를 위한 식량계획’입니다.
‘평화를 위한 식량계획’의 빌 하민크 사무국장은 USAID와 국제 공여국들이 전쟁과 자연재해 등으로 고통을 당하는, 만성적으로 취약한 나라들이 늘어나고 있는 상황에 직면하고 있다고 말했습니다.
USAID는 피해국 정부들과 협력해 ‘기근 조기경보 체제’와 같은 도구를 이용해 필요에 부응하고 있습니다. 이것은 식량부족사태에 대비해 기후와 경제 농업 추세를 추적하기 위해 데이터베이스, 즉 컴퓨타 자료망을 이용하는 것입니다. 매주 USAID는 세계 35여개국에 35만톤 이상의 완두콩과, 녹두를 포함한 콩종류, 옥수수, 밀 식물성 기름 등의 식량을 수송하고 있습니다. 이 식량 원조는 세계식량계획과 민간 비정부기구들이 이를 필요로 하는 사람들에게 분배하고 있습니다.

반기문 유엔 사무총장은 오마르 알-바시르 수단 대통령에게 다르푸르에서 즉각 휴전하도록 촉구했습니다.
조지 부시 미국 대통령은 미국은 다르푸르 인들에게 자행되는 악폐를 외면하지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다. ‘평화를 위한 식량계획’의 빌 하민크 사무국장이 말한 대로, 미국이 다르푸르지역 등 여러 지역에 제공하는 식량원조는 미국 국민의 배려하는 마음과 선심, 그리고 관용적인 태도를 보여주는 것입니다.

The United States is the single largest food aid donor in the world, providing half of the world's emergency food assistance. The main vehicle for this aid is the Food for Peace Program of the U.S. Agency for International Development, or U-S-A-I-D.
Bill Hammink is the director of the Food for Peace Program. He says that U-S-A-I-D and its international partners are seeing increasing numbers of "chronically vulnerable communities" that have been weakened by war, natural disasters, and other causes.
In collaboration with affected governments, U-S-A-I-D answers needs by using such tools as the Famine Early Warning System Network. This is a database used to track climate, economic, and agricultural trends to project potential food shortages. Each week, U-S-A-I-D ships more than three-hundred-fifty-thousand metric tons of food items including peas, beans, lentils, cornmeal, wheat, and vegetable oil to more than thirty-five countries. This food aid is then distributed by the World Food Program and private nongovernmental organizations to people in need.
Sub-Saharan Africa has received more than one billion dollars a year in emergency food assistance from the United States in recent years. Sudan's Darfur region is a major beneficiary of Food for Peace. In Darfur, over two hundred thousand people have died since 2003 as a result of government-orchestrated attacks, famine and disease, and millions of others have been displaced. Along with the World Food Program and private aid groups, Food for Peace is helping to feed some two-and-a-half million internally displaced Sudanese and more than two-hundred thousand refugees who have fled Darfur into neighboring Chad and the Central African Republic. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to implement an immediate cease-fire in Darfur.
The United States, says President George W. Bush says, will not look away from the evil being perpetrated against the people of Darfur. As Food for Peace Program Director Bill Hammink says, the food aid the United States is providing to those in Darfur and elsewhere demonstrates "the giving, and benevolence, and caring of the American people."
