반기문 유엔 사무총장은 6일 오마르 알 바쉬르 수단 대통령과 두번째 회담을 갖습니다. 이보다 앞서 3일 반 총장은 다르푸르 지역의 알살람 난민촌을 방문한 바 있습니다.
다르푸르 북부 알살람 거주 난민 수천명은 반 총장의 방문을 환호하며 맞았습니다. 반 총장은 자신은 난민들이 겪고 있는 빈곤과 역경을 목격하고 충격을 받았다고 말하고, 이번 방문으로 이 지역에 평화를 가져와야 겠다는 자신의 의지가 더욱 굳어졌다고 말했습니다.
반 총장은 또 3일 알 바쉬르 수단 대통령을 만난 직후, 수단 정부와 반군간의 평화 협상을 주선하는데 진전이 이뤄졌다고 밝혔습니다. 반 총장은 군사적 방법만으로는 다르푸르 사태를 해결할 수 없다고 강조했습니다.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will hold a second meeting with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir today (Thursday), after visiting a camp for displaced persons in the troubled Darfur region.
Mr. Ban was cheered by thousands of refugees during his visit to a refugee camp (Al Salaam) in North Darfur on Wednesday. The U.N. leader says he was shocked by the poverty and hardship of the refugees and said his visit strengthened his resolve to bring peace to the region.
Mr. Ban met initially with the Sudanese president on Monday.
On Wednesday, the secretary-general said he had made good progress in organizing long-promised peace talks between Sudan's government and rebels. He said a military solution alone will not work for Darfur.
