미국과 북한은 1일, 제네바에서 6자회담 북미 관계정상화 실무그룹회의 첫날 회의를 마친 뒤 각각 만족감을 표시했습니다.
크리스토퍼 힐 미 국무부 동아시아태평양 담당 차관보와 김계관 외무성 부상을 각각 수석대표로 한 북미 대표단은 이날, 제네바 미국 대표부에서 북미관계 정상화 실무그룹 2차회의를 가졌습니다.
이날 회의에서 양국은 두나라간 관계 정상화 문제와 비핵화 2단계 이행방안인 북한 핵시설 불능화와 농축우라늄 의혹을 비롯한 핵프로그램의 전면 신고, 북한의 일본인 납치, 차기 북핵 6자회담 본회담 개최등의 모든 사안을 다뤘습니다.
한국의 연합통신에 따르면, 힐 차관보는 기자들에게 “아직 가야 할 길은 멀지만, 북일 관계정상화 실무그룹회의에 이어 9월 중순 개최를 목표로 한 북핵 6자회담 본회담을 성공시키도록 하자는데 실질적인 이해가 있었다”고 밝혔습니다.
힐 차관보는 또 “다음 단계에서 북측이 해체를 통한 핵시설의 불능화와 핵프로그램 전면신고 등을 이행하고, 우리 측은 연료와 에너지, 경제 지원 등을 이행하는 문제를 논의했다”며 “지금은 매우 중요한 시기이며, 6자회담 본회담에서 ‘2.13 합의 스타일’의 합의를 이뤄내기를 희망한다”고 강조했습니다.
한편, 김계관 외상은 이날 회담이 잘 됐다면서 ‘9.19공동성명’을 이행하기 위한 다음 단계를 어떻게 정하며, 각측의 의무사항을 어떻게 보며, 이행순서를 어떻게 맞출 것이냐를 논의했다고 말했습니다.

U.S. and North Korean envoys have opened talks in Geneva on normalizing relations, and possibly removing the reclusive state from Washington's list of countries that sponsor terrorism.
The two-day meeting in Switzerland is part of a flurry of working group sessions called for by a six-nation disarmament agreement in February. Under the deal, North Korea agreed to end its nuclear program in exchange for political concessions and fuel aid.
Speaking with reporters in Geneva before the talks began, U.S. nuclear envoy (Assistant Secretary of State) Christopher Hill said the negotiations are important because North Korea's nuclear ambitions are not just a problem for the United States. He said the talks hold out hope for relations between North Korea and other countries in the region.
Hill said he hopes North Korea will declare and disable all of its facilities by the end of the year, and then begin a final phase in 2008 - scrapping all of its nuclear weapons.
