President Bush says the United States will keep an active presence in Asia to make sure that old tensions do not flare between China and Japan.
In an interview (Thursday) with Australia's Sky television before next week's Asia-Pacific summit in Sydney, Mr. Bush said the U.S. has good relations with leaders in both China and Japan.
He also highlighted the progress that Asia is making and the benefits it is reaping from trade.
Some analysts have recently criticized the United States for overlooking Asia because of its focus on Iraq and the Middle East.
Mr. Bush has postponed a planned trip to Singapore next week to meet Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) leaders.
And earlier this month, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice skipped an ASEAN regional forum in the Philippines to attend talks in the Middle East.
