국제원자력기구30일 IAEA는 이란이 핵개발 의혹을 해명하기 위해 자료를 제출한 것은 큰 진전 이라고 말했습니다. 또 IAEA는 이란의 우라늄 농축 활동이 당초 예상보다 느리게 진행되고 있다고 덧붙였습니다.
이에 앞서 이란은 지난 27일 핵개발 의혹을 불식시키기 위해 핵개발 자료를 IAEA에 제출했습니다. IAEA는 이란의 이 같은 자료 제출에 대해 과거와는 다를 것이라고 높게 평가했습니다. 이란은 지금까지 1990년대 비밀리에 실시해온 것으로 알려진 핵프로그램에 대해 설명을 거부해 왔습니다.
그러나 미국은 이란의 이 같은 해명이 충분치 않다는 반응을 보였습니다. 미 국무부의 톰 케이시 부대변인은 이란이 우라늄 농축에 대해 제대로 해명을 하지 않았다며 국제사회가 이란에 좀더 압력을 가해야 한다고 말했습니다.
미국과 서방 동맹국들은 이란이 비밀리에 핵개발을 하고 있다고 비판해왔습니다. 반면 이란은 자신들은 평화적인 핵활용만 하고 있다며 그 같은 혐의를 부인해 왔습니다.

The U.N. nuclear watchdog says Iran's cooperation to resolve questions about its nuclear program is what the agency calls a "significant step forward."
The International Atomic Energy Agency, or IAEA, made the comment in a report obtained by news agencies. It also said Iran's uranium enrichment program is continuing at a slower rate than expected.
The Vienna-based watchdog said once Iran's past nuclear activities have been clarified, the country will need to continue to build confidence about the scope and nature of its present and future nuclear programs.
But the United States says Iran should have answered questions about its nuclear program four years ago.
A State Department spokesman (Tom Casey) said Iran has failed to comply with an international obligation to stop uranium enrichment and therefore the international community will continue to increase pressure on the country.
