Reports from Burma say authorities in Rangoon have detained another group of demonstrators protesting against a steep rise in fuel prices.
Witnesses say at least 17 activists were arrested today (Friday) as they gathered in front of City Hall in the former capital of Rangoon. The protests are the fourth such rally this week.
Witnesses also said that plain-clothes police agents and security forces were fanning out across the city to prevent more demonstrations.
The wave of rare and sometimes large protests in Rangoon began on Sunday and have continued almost daily. At a rally on Wednesday, witnesses say 300 people participated in a rally one day after the government arrested 13 prominent democracy activists.
Wire service reports say the protests appear to be spreading beyond the city of Rangoon.
Some rights activists are already comparing this week's protests to a 1988 pro-democracy uprising that was brutally suppressed by the military.
