열대성 폭풍 허리케인 딘이 22일 멕시코만에 상륙했습니다. 멕시코 정부는 이날 재난 경계령을 내렸습니다.
미국 국립기상청은 허리케인 딘이 시속 31km로 멕시코 만을 통과하고 있으며 이날 오후 멕시코 북동부 베라쿠르즈 를 통해 다시 육지에 상륙할 것으로 전망했습니다. 기상청은 또 허리케인 딘을 허리케인 1등급에서 2등급으로 올렸습니다. 폭풍의 세력이 한층 강해졌다는 뜻입니다. 기상당국은 허리케인이 통과하는 지역에 강한 바람과 함께 최대 4백mm의 집중 호우가 내릴 것으로 예상했습니다.
허리케인 딘이 접근해오자 멕시코만 근처 석유시설에서 작업중이던 근로자 수천명이 대피했습니다.
멕시코 당국은 허리케인이 통과한 인구 12만의 카르멘시 70%가 물에 잠겼다고 말했습니다. 또 허리케인 딘으로 인해 멕시코의 주요 농작물인 옥수수와 사탕수수 생산도 크게 감소할 것으로 우려하고 있습니다.

Burma's military government broke up a rare public protest of several hundred people in the main city of Rangoon today (Wednesday), the second such rally this week.
Witnesses say as many as 300 people participated in the defiant gathering just one day after Burma's military government arrested 13 activists.
They say protesters were marching through the streets of Rangoon today before being stopped by a pro-government mob. Eight of them were thrown into a car and driven away.
They were released several hours later.
A State Department statement today condemned the arrests of pro-democracy activists (Min Ko Naing, Ko Ko Gyi) and others who were holding peaceful demonstrations about fuel prices.
The statement called for their immediate release and an end to what it says is the Burmese regime's blatant attempts to silence and intimidate those who peacefully promote democracy and human rights.
