Afghanistan celebrated its 88th anniversary of independence from British rule today (Sunday) as Taleban militants continue to threaten the government.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai told thousands of people gathered at the Kabul sports stadium that there were still plots against Afghanistan by "enemies of the land", referring to the Taleban-led insurgency.
Mr. Karzai denounced the killing of innocent civilians and called for young Afghans to educate themselves to preserve their freedom.
Meanwhile, Mullah Omar, the elusive Taleban leader in Afghanistan, issued a statement calling for people to join militants trying to oust the U.S.-backed Karzai government.
Afghanistan won its independence from Britain in 1919, after three Afghan-British wars.
