Aid workers in Peru are struggling to rescue hundreds of people after a massive earthquake ravaged the country's coast, killing at least 450 people.

Authorities say hundreds of victims of Wednesday night's eight-point-zero magnitude quake are still trapped or stranded in port cities on Peru's central coast. Rescue efforts have been hampered by destroyed roads.

The earthquake and several aftershocks injured at least 15-hundred people. The quake lasted about two minutes and caused massive damage and blackouts across the country.

Many buildings collapsed or suffered structural damage -- including hospitals, which are now overrun with victims in dire need of treatment.

President Alan Garcia declared a state of emergency today (Thursday), prompting international relief efforts.

U.S. President George Bush offered his condolences to the Peruvian people and said the United States is ready to provide assistance as needed. Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela and the International Red Cross are also launching relief efforts. Colombian President Alvaro Uribe is expected to visit Peru in the coming days. The United Nations is offering its support as well.
