Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has expressed remorse for the suffering Japan caused during World War Two.
Speaking on the 62nd anniversary of Japan's surrender, Mr. Abe acknowledged today (Wednesday) that Japan caused great damage and pain for many countries, especially in Asia. He expressed his sympathy to war victims.
Mr. Abe joined a secular memorial service with Emperor Akihito but broke with tradition by not visiting the controversial Yasukuni war shrine. The shrine honors Japan's war dead, including convicted war criminals.
Mr. Abe has not said whether he will visit the shrine later, but Japanese media say he and his cabinet ministers likely will not make the trip.
China and South Korea say the shrine is an offensive reminder of Japan's war atrocities.
