서 아프리카의 시에라 리온에서 11일 새 대통령과 국회의원을 선출하기 위한 기념비적인 선거가 실시되고 있습니다.
시에라 리온 유권자들은 폭우가 내리는 가운데도 투표장소에 나와 길게 줄을 서서 차례를 기다리고 있습니다.
투표소가 문을 열기 전부터 유권자들이 미리 나와 줄을 서는 등 이번 선거에 대한 시에라 리온 국민의 관심과 열기가 대단합니다.
현재 7명이 대통령 후보로 출마했으며, 이들 가운데 55 퍼센트 이상의 지지를 획득한 사람이 나오지 않을 경우, 2주 안에 결선투표가 실시됩니다.
현재 전국적으로 투표가 평화롭게 진행되고 있는 것으로 알려졌으며, 선거 감시관들은 부정행위가 발견되지 않았다고 말했습니다.
그러나 일부 투표소에서는 투표 절차에 관한 혼란으로 문제가 야기되고 있습니다.
대통령 후보 가운데 한 명인 솔로몬 베레와 현 부통령은 투표소에 질서가 없다는 이유로 투표를 나중으로 미뤘습니다.
이번 선거는 2년전 시에라 리온에서 유엔 평화유지군이 철수한 이후 처음 실시되는 것입니다.
Voters in Sierra Leone braved long lines and heavy rain today (Saturday) to vote in landmark presidential and parliamentary elections.
Voter enthusiasm appeared high as lines formed hours before polls opened.
Seven candidates are running for president of the west African country. If none receives 55 percent of the vote, Sierra Leone will schedule a run-off election within two weeks.
Reports from around the country say voting has been peaceful and election observers have said fraud is not a problem.
But confusion over voting procedures at some polling places have caused frustration. Even one of the presidential candidates -- Vice-President Solomon Berewa -- decided to put off his vote until later in the day because of chaotic conditions at his polling place.
The elections are the first since U.N. peacekeepers pulled out of Sierra Leone two years ago.
