1989년 중국 텐안먼 광장 민주화 시위중 구속된 한 남성이 18년만에 석방됐다고 홍콩의 한 인권단체가 밝혔습니다.
홍콩의 ‘인권과 민주정보 센터’는 오늘(10일) 민주화 운동가 지 하오리앙이 지난 7일 베이징의 감옥에서 석방됐다고 말했습니다.
지 하오리앙은 지난 1989년 6월 4일 텐안먼 광장에서 민주화 시위를 벌이던 중 인민해방군의 무력 진압을 육탄방어하다가 체포됐었습니다. 지씨는 당시 사형선고를 받았으나 이후 징역으로 형이 감형됐습니다.
중국 정부는 당시 평화시위를 탱크를 동원해 무력으로 진압, 적어도 수 백명의 시위자가 숨졌습니다.
A Hong Kong-based human rights group says a Chinese man jailed for his involvement in the Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protests has been released from prison after 18 years.
The Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said today (Friday) that Xi Haoliang was released from a Beijing prison Tuesday.
Xi is reported to have joined a crowd burning debris to prevent troops from entering Tiananmen Square on the morning of June fourth, 1989. His actions led to a death sentence, which was later commuted to a prison term.
Chinese troops and tanks killed hundreds and possibly thousands of demonstrators in 1989 in Beijing, putting a brutal end to weeks of peaceful protests in Tiananmen Square.
The government has called the protests a counter-revolutionary rebellion and has rejected all calls to reassess its position.
