아프가니스탄의 하미드 카르자이 대통령은 아프간 정부가 탈레반에 의해 억류된 한국인 21명을 석방시키기 위해 모든 노력을 다 기울일 것이며 더 많은 납치를 초래할 조치는 취하지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다.
카르자이 대통령은 5일 미국의 CNN 방송과의 회견에서 한국인 인질들의 안전한 석방을 촉구면서 대부분의 인질들이 여성들이라고 전제하고 진정한 회교도들과 아프간 주민들은 여성들을 상대로 범죄를 저지르지 않는다는 이유를 들면서 탈레반 납치범들은 회교도도, 아프간 인도 아니라고 말했습니다.
카르자이 대통령은 아프간 정부가 탈레반과 직접 협상을 할 것인가라는 질문을 받고 정부는 한국인들을 석방시키기 위해 더많은 인질 납치를 고무시키는 방법이 아닌 다른 모든 수단을 다 동원할 것이라고 답했습니다.
탈레반은 납치한 한국인을 석방하는 대가로 아프간 정부가 일부 탈레반 수감자들을 석방해 주길 원하고 있으나 아프간 정부는 현재까지 그같은 인질 교환을 거부하고 있습니다.
한편 카르자이 대통령은 5일 조지 부시 미국대통령을 만나게 되면 점차 악화되어가는 아프간의 안보 사태를 논의할 계획이라고 말했습니다.
한편 카르자이 대통령은 5일 미국 CNN-TV과의 회견에서 미국 주도의 연합군에 대한 자살 폭탄 공격과 다른 공격 사건들이 늘어가고 있는 것이 이웃나라 이란의 탓은 아니라고 말했습니다.
카르자이 대통령은 이란은 방해자라기보다는 아프간 문제를 해결하기 위한 협조자로 존재하고 있다고 덧붙였습니다.
카르자이 대통령은 아프간 정부는 이란이 저항분자들에 무기를 제공하고 있다는 보도를 조사하고 있으나 아프간 정부는 이란과 좋은 관계를 계속 유지할 것이라고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령과 카르자이 대통령은 5일과 6일 이곳 워싱턴 근교에 있는 부시대통령 별장 캠프 데이빗에서 회담할 계획입니다.

Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai says his government is doing whatever it can to free 21 South Koreans held by the Taleban, but says he will not take any step that would result in more kidnappings.
In an interview (recorded Saturday and) broadcast today (Sunday) on CNN, Mr. Karzai called for the safe release of the hostages. He said their Taleban kidnappers "are neither Muslims nor Afghans" because so many hostages are female, and true Muslims and Afghans would not commit crimes against females.
Asked if his government would negotiate directly with the Taleban, Mr. Karzai replied "we will do everything other than encourage (more) hostage taking" to free the Koreans.
The Taleban wants the government to release some Taleban prisoners in exchange for the South Koreans. The Afghan government has so far refused a swap.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai says he plans to discuss his country's worsening security situation when he meets with President Bush today (Sunday).
In an interview broadcast on CNN today, Mr. Karzai said he does not blame neighboring Iran for the rising number of suicide bombings and attacks on U.S.-led coalition forces.
Mr. Karzai said in the interview (recorded Saturday) that Iran has been more of "a helper and a solution" to Afghanistan's problems than a hindrance.
His position contrasts sharply with the Bush administration, which has blamed Iran for bankrolling terrorists and supplying arms to militants in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Mr. Karzai said Afghanistan is investigating reports that Iran is arming insurgents but said his government will continue to have "good relations" with Tehran.
Mr. Bush and the Afghan president are scheduled to meet today and Monday at (the presidential retreat) Camp David, outside Washington.
