토니 블레어 전 영국 총리는 24일 요르단강 서안 라말라에서 마흐무드 압바드 팔레스타인 정부 수반과 회담을 가졌습니다.
중동 특사 자격으로 중동 방문에 나선 블레어 전총리는 이날 압바스 수반과 살렘 파예드 팔레스타인 총리와 만나 팔레스타인 문제를 집중 논의했습니다.
이에 앞서 블레어는 에루살렘에서 시몬 페레스 이스라엘 대통령을 만났습니다. 블레어 특사는 회담을 마치고 기자들과 만나 자신이 이번 방문을 통해 중동 평화 정착을 위한 ‘새로운 가능성’을 발견했다고 설명했습니다. 페레스 대통령도 블레어씨가 복잡하게 꼬인 중동평화 문제를 풀기 위한 최적의 인사라고 말했습니다.
블레어 특사는 팔레스타인 자치 정부와 이스라엘을 설득해 민주적인 팔레스타인 독립 정부를 세우기 위한 방안을 모색하고 있습니다. 앞서 블레어 특사는 지난달 영국 총리직을 사임하고 유엔,미국, 유럽연합(EU), 러시아 등에 의해 중동평화 중재를 위한 4자 특사로 임명됐습니다.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, in his new role as Middle East envoy, says there is "a sense of possibility" in the region.
Mr. Blair held talks today (Tuesday) in the West Bank town of Ramallah with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. Earlier, he met with Israeli President Shimon Peres.
Mr. Blair told a news conference in Jerusalem that his first trip to the region as envoy was a chance to listen, learn and reflect.
Mr. Peres said he could not think of a better person to handle the complicated situation. He said Israeli officials are happy to have Mr. Blair in his new post, but know his position will be challenging.
Mr. Blair is also holding talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
