중동 지역 평화중재를 위한 국제 4자모임인 ‘콰르텟’ 대표들이 19일 포르투갈 리스본에서 토니 블레어 전 영국 총리와 만났습니다. 블레어 전 총리는 총리 사임 후 콰르텟의 특사 역할을 맡았습니다.
이 날 회의에서는 블레어 전 총리의 활동 계획에 초점이 맞춰진 가운데, 지난 16일 조지 부시 미국 대통령이 제안한 중동 평화 국제 컨퍼런스 개최 문제도 논의될 예정이었습니다. 부시 대통령은 이스라엘-팔레스타인 평화 프로세스를 재개하기 위해 컨퍼런스를 제안한 바 있습니다.
아메드 아블 게이트 전 이집트 외상은 컨퍼런스와 관련해서 오는 9월 뉴욕에서 열리는 유엔총회와 함께 개최될 것이라고 말했습니다.
한편 콰르텟 특사인 블레어 전 총리는 앞으로 팔레스타인의 개발과 경제 확충을 위한 기금을 모금을 벌일 계획입니다. 콘돌리자 라이스 미국 국무장관은 블레어 전 총리의 임무가 미국이 주도하는 평화 노력과 보완적인 역할을 할 것이라고 말했습니다.
‘콰르텟’은 미국과 러시아, 유엔, 유럽연합으로 구성되어 있습니다.

The international Quartet of Middle East mediators is meeting in Lisbon today (Thursday) with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the group's new special envoy.
Talks were expected to focus on Mr. Blair's plans, as well as President Bush's announcement Monday that he would like to hold an international conference on reviving the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
Egypt's foreign minister (Ahmed Abul Gheit) says the conference will take place on the sidelines of September's United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Mr. Blair's duties include raising funds for the Palestinians and developing their infrastructure and economy. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says she sees his role as complementary to U.S.-led peace efforts.
The Quartet consists of the U.S., Russia, the United Nations, and the European Union.
