이라크 주둔 미군 병사 2명이 이라크 양민을 살해한 혐의로 기소됐다고 미군당국이 밝혔습니다.
미군은 오늘(19일) 발표한 성명에서 두 명의 미군 병사가 지난달 23일 북부 키르쿠크에서 양민을 살해한 혐의로 기소됐다고 말했습니다. 성명은 또 이 사건과 직접 연루되지 않았으나 책임을 물어 이들의 상관을 직위해제했다고 덧붙였습니다.
앞서 미국 서부 캘리포니아주 펜들턴 군기지에서 미군 배심원단은 18일 이라크 하마다니아시에서 지난해 52세 이라크인을 살해한 혐의를 받아온 미 해병대 소속 트렌트 토마스 상병에 대해 유죄를 선고했습니다.
The U.S. military says two soldiers have been charged with the murder of an Iraqi citizen.
In a statement, the military said the charges were announced today (Thursday). The soldiers (Sergeant First Class Trey Corrales and Specialist Christopher Shore) are accused of a murder in Kirkuk, Iraq, that took place on or around June 23rd.
Their commanding officer (Lieutenant Colonel Michael Browder) has been relieved of his duties, although the military says he has not been charged in the case.
Wednesday, a U.S. military jury at Camp Pendleton in (the western U.S. state of) California convicted Marine Corporal Trent Thomas of kidnapping and conspiracy. The case involved last year's killing of 52-year-old Hashim Ibrahim Awad in the Iraqi town of Hamdania.
The jury cleared Thomas on charges of premeditated murder, making a false statement and housebreaking.
