조지 부시 미국대통령과 반기문 유엔사무총장의 17일 백악관회동에서는 테러리즘이 집중 논의됐습니다. 좀 더 자세히 전해드립니다.
부시 대통령과 반기문 유엔 사무총장의 이날 회동은 아프리카 나라, 수단의 분쟁지역인 다르푸르사태와 레바논에서의 반시리아 정치인 암살사건에 대한 유엔 조사활동에 관해 논의하는 자리였습니다.
그러나 알카에다가 또다시 미국을 공격할 의지가 있다는 새로운 첩보보고서가 나오면서 부시 대통령은 회동 후 기자들에게 주로 테러리즘에 관해 언급했습니다.
부시 대통령은 만약 미군병력이 공세적인 입지를 지키지 못했다면 알카에다 테러분자들은 훨씬 더 강해졌을 것이라고 말했습니다. 부시 대통령은 지난 2001년 미국의 뉴욕과 워싱턴에 대한 9.11 테러공격을 예로 들면서 미국인들에게 갈수록 인기없는 이라크전쟁을 정당화하려 했습니다. 미국에 대한 미래 공격을 사전에 차단하기 위해서는 해외 알카에다 조직을 분쇄하는 것이 국익에 이롭다고 부시 대통령은 강조했습니다.
이들 테러분자들은 2001년 9.11 테러공격을 명령한 인물인 오사마 빈 라덴에게 충성을 서약했으며 이라크 같은 지역에서 미국이 물러나기를 바라고 있다고 부시 대통령은 지적했습니다. 대신 미국이 떠난 곳에 악의에 찬 이념을 확산시킬 은신처를 수립하려 한다는 것입니다. 부시 대통령은 미국 정부는 미국 국민을 보호하고 신생 민주체제들을 보호하기 위한 확고한 결의를 갖고 있다고 강조했습니다.
한편 반기문 유엔 사무총장은 이라크사태는 세계적인 중대 현안이라고 지적하고 유엔은 이라크정부가 현재 직면하고 있는 난관을 극복하도록 지원할 준비가 돼 있다고 말했습니다.
반 총장은 이라크의 경제적, 사회적 재건은 물론 정치적 기반을 확립하도록 유엔이 지원할 것이라면서 이라크를 위해 확대 각료회담과 국제사회 결집노력을 계속할 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 이런 노력을 통해 이라크 국민과 국제사회는 힘을 합해 이라크에서 평화와 안보가 확립될 수 있는 절호의 기회를 제공하게 될 것이라고 반 총장은 말했습니다.
앞서 지난 16일 반 총장은 미군의 이라크 조기철수는 현지의 치안상황을 더욱 악화시킬 수 있다면서 이라크주둔 미군병력이 조속히 철수해서는 안될 것이라고 경고한 바 있습니다.
부시 대통령은 3만명의 미군병력 증강이 실효를 거두고 있는지를 판단하는 것은 아직은 시기상조라고 말했습니다. 이에 반해 야당인 민주당은 이라크주둔 미군 가운데 전투병력을 내년 2008년 4월까지 완전 철수시키기 위한 일정표를 요구하고 있습니다.
부시 대통령과 반기문 유엔사무총장은 이날 회동에서 북한과 이란, 아프가니스탄, 이스라엘과 팔레스타인분쟁 그리고 지구 기후변화 등에 대해서도 논의했습니다.

Terrorism topped the agenda for U.S. President George Bush as he met Tuesday with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. VOA White House Correspondent Scott Stearns has the story.
The president and secretary-general discussed the humanitarian crisis in Sudan's troubled Darfur region and U.N. investigations into the killings of anti-Syrian politicians in Lebanon.
But the president focused on terrorism in remarks to reporters following his meeting with the secretary-general on a day when a new intelligence estimate says al-Qaida remains determined to attack the United States.
Mr. Bush says those terrorists would be a lot stronger today if U.S. troops had not stayed on the offensive. He again sought to use the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington to help justify an unpopular war in Iraq, saying it is in America's interest to defeat al-Qaida overseas to prevent future attacks at home.
"These people have sworn allegiance to the very same man who ordered the attack on September the 11th, 2001, Osama bin Laden. And they want us to leave parts of the world, like Iraq, so they can establish a safe haven from which to spread their poisonous ideology. And we are steadfast in our determination to not only protect the American people, but to protect these young democracies."
The U.N. secretary-general says Iraq is a problem for the whole world and his organization is prepared to help the Iraqi government overcome its difficulties.
"We are going to help their political facilitation, as well as economic and social reconstruction. And we also are going to continue the international compact process for Iraq, as well as expanded foreign ministers meeting. This will provide good opportunity for Iraqi people and international community to work together for peace and security in Iraq."
Mr. Ban Monday cautioned against any rapid withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq saying that could lead to a further deterioration of the security situation.
President Bush says it is too soon to judge whether his decision to send 30-thousand more troops to Iraq is working. Opposition Democrats want a timetable for withdrawal that would have all U.S. combat forces out of Iraq by next April.
The president and secretary-general also discussed Iran, North Korea, Afghanistan, the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, and global climate change.
