한편 제임스 황 타이완 외무장관은 7일 타이완은 코스타리카의 결정에 따라 코스타리카와의 외교를 단절한다고 밝혔습니다.
전세계적으로 타이완과 국교를 수립하고 있는 국가는 24개국으로 대부분이 아프리카나 중남미 그리고 카리브해 연안의 소규모 개발도상국들입니다.

China is welcoming Costa Rica's decision to sever diplomatic relations with Taiwan in favor of Beijing, saying the move is in the interests of both countries' citizens.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman (Jiang Yu) said other Latin American countries that still recognize Taipei should follow Costa Rica's lead. She said China is ready to normalize relations with those countries, and that Taiwan is the only obstacle to that development.
In Taipei, Taiwan's foreign minister (James Huang) said (Thursday) the self-governing island has severed diplomatic relations with Costa Rica in response to the Central America nation's decision.
Only 24 countries recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state. Most of them are small or developing countries in Africa, Central America and the Caribbean. Both China and Taiwan have been trying to spread their wealth among the countries in a bid to earn or maintain their allegiance.
