유럽내 미국의 미사일 방어체제 구축 계획을 둘러싸고 논란이 가열되고 있는 가운데 조지 부시 미국 대통령과 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령이 선진 8개국 G-8정상회담에서 별도로 만나 회담을 갖고 있습니다.
앞서 부시대통령은 푸틴 대통령에게 러시아가 미국의 계획에 크게 우려할 이유가 없음과 미국은 러시아에 적대감을 가지고 있지 않다는 점을 확신시킬 것이라고 말했습니다. 부시 대통령은 또 미국의 미사일 방어 체제는 러시아가 아닌 적성국가들의 공격을 방어하는 것을 목적으로 한다고 말했습니다.
한편 푸틴 대통령은 미국의 계획은 러시아의 안보에 위협이되며, 만일 미국의 미사일 체제가 유럽에 구축되면 러시아 미사일들은 유럽 내 공격물을 겨냥 할 것이라고 다짐했습니다.
부시 대통령은 또 미국은 전세계 온난화에 대응하기 위한 국제적 노력에 “적극적으로 참여할 것”이라고 말했습니다.

U.S. President George W. Bush and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, are meeting on the sidelines of the Group of Eight summit in Germany amid tensions over U.S. plans for deploying a missile defense system in Europe.
Earlier, Mr. Bush said he hopes to convince the Russian leader his country should not be overly concerned about the U.S. plans.
The U.S. president said he would assure the Russian leader that the United States bears no animosity toward his country. He stressed that the U.S. missile defense system is aimed at preventing attacks from rogue nations -- not Russia.
Mr. Putin has said the system is a threat to his nation's security, and has vowed to aim Russian missiles at European targets if the system is installed.
Mr. Bush also said the United states will be "actively involved" in international efforts to combat global warming.
