U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the United States is concerned about reports of Iranian-made weapons being smuggled to Taleban militants in Afghanistan.

Gates told reporters in Kabul today (Monday) there is some evidence that some weapons are coming into Afghanistan for the Taleban. But he added the United States does not have information showing the government of Iran is supporting the weapons flow.

President Karzai agreed there is no proof of involvement by Tehran. He also said
Afghanistan's relationship with Iran had never been better.

Gates said in addition to the Taleban, some of the Iranian-made weapons may also be headed to criminals involved in the country's booming drug trade.

Afghanistan is the world's largest producer of opium and supplies about 90 percent of the world's heroin.

Gates made the comments following a meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on his second visit to the country since taking over as defense chief last December.
