Lebanese security officials say troops battling Fatah al-Islam militants in a Palestinian refugee camp have killed one of the group's top leaders.
Palestinian sources confirmed today (Sunday) that Naim Ghali, also known as Abu Riyadh, was killed by army sniper fire on Friday at the Nahr el-Bared camp near Tripoli. Ghali was described by security sources as a senior military leader of the militant group.
Also today (Sunday), a Lebanese official said nine soldiers have been killed since Friday when the army began a large-scale attack to force militants from the refugee camp.
At least 44 Lebanese troops, 45 militants and 20 civilians have been killed since the government's battle with Fatah al-Islam began two weeks ago.
