타이완의 리덩후이 전 총통이 중국의 반대에도 불구하고 일본을 방문했습니다.
일본은 리 전 총통의 방문은 개인적인 용무때문이라고 말하고 있으나 리 전 총통은 11일동안의 방문기간 중 강연과 기자회견을 가질 예정입니다.
중국은 리 전 총통을 대만 독립 분리주의자로 간주하고 있으며 중국 외교부는 그의 일본 방문에 대해 반대의 목소리를 높여왔습니다.
리 전 총통은 오늘(30일) 도쿄에 도착한 뒤 이번 방문기간중 그의 형의 위패가 있는 야스쿠니 신사를 방문할 계획이라고 말했습니다. 리 전 총통의 형은 타이완이 일본의 식민지 시절 일본군으로 참전해 필리핀에서 전사한 것으로 알려져 있습니다.

Former Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui is in Japan, despite objections from China.
Japan has said Mr. Lee's visit is for personal reasons, but the former president is
scheduled to give speeches and hold a news conference during his 11-day stay.
China considers Mr. Lee a separatist, and the Foreign Ministry has voiced objections
to Japan.
After arriving in Tokyo today (Wednesday), Mr. Lee said he plans to visit the Yasukuni
war shrine, where his brother is buried for fighting with Japanese forces while Taiwan
was still a Japanese colony.
China and South Korea say Yasukuni represents Japan's wartime atrocities, and have
objected to Japanese leaders visiting the shrine.
China and Taiwan split in 1949 during a civil war, but Beijing claims the self-ruled
island is part of its territory.
