British prosecutors have accused a former Russian spy of murdering Russian exile Alexander Litvinenko last year in London, and say they will seek his extradition.
Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett summoned the Russian ambassador today (Tuesday), telling him that London expects Moscow's full cooperation in bringing spy-turned-businessman Andrei Lugovoi to British justice.
However, a spokeswoman for the Russian prosecutor-general later said the country's constitution prohibits the handover of any Russian citizen to another country. She did not rule out prosecuting Lugovoi in Russia.
The standoff follows a months-long probe into the death of Kremlin critic Litvinenko, who died November 23rd of radiation poisoning. Chief British prosecutor Ken MacDonald today called the poisoning deliberate.
British police determined that Litvinenko had met with Lugovoi and another Russian businessman at a London hotel on November first -- the day the Kremlin critic fell ill.
