천수이볜 대만 총통은 타이페이 시의 역사적 건물에서 장카이색 전 총통의 이름을 삭제했습니다.
장 총통은 한 때 중국대륙을 통치했으나 50년전 마오쩌뚱이 이끄는 공산당에 패한후 국민당원과 함께 대만으로 피신했습니다. 그는 이후 대만을 철권 통치했으며, 계엄령을 선포한 후 정치적 반발을 막았습니다.
대만의 집권 민주진보당은 이 중정기념관에서 독재자의 이름이 지워져야 하며, 대신에 대만의 민주주의 운동가들을 기리기 위해 재헌정돼야 한다는 입장입니다. 기념비의 새 이름은 민주주의기념관으로 명명됐습니다.
한편 이 날 기념관 밖에서는 비가 오는 와중에도 이름을 바꾸는데 반대하는 시위가 열렸습니다.
천수이볜 총통의 민주진보당은 최근 수개월간 국제공항의 이름을 바꾸고 군 부대의 동상을 제거하는 등 장카이색 전 총통의 흔적을 없애기 위한 노력을 기울여왔습니다.

Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian has removed the name of the island's former leader Chiang Kai-shek from a landmark memorial in the capital of Taipei City today (Saturday).
Mr. Chiang once ruled all of China, but fled to Taiwan with his Nationalist Party nearly five decades ago after he was defeated by Mao Zedong's Communists. He ruled Taiwan with an iron fist, implementing martial law and discouraging political dissent.
Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party says the memorial should not be named after an authoritarian leader, and instead rededicated it to honor democracy activists on the island. The new name is Democracy Memorial Hall.
Several protesters gathered in the rain outside the memorial today to voice their opposition.
President Chen's DPP has been chipping away at Mr. Chiang's legacy for months, striking his name from the island's international airport and removing his statues from military bases.
