세 나라 대통령들은 12일, 투르크메니스탄, 투르크멘바시에서 3개국 정상회담을 갖고 천연가스관 공사에 합의했다고 발표했습니다.
러시아는 미국이 러시아 영토를 경유하지 않기 위해 카스피해 해저를 관통하는 가스관 건설을 추진중인 것에 대한 경쟁으로 카스피해 연안을 지나는 가스관 건설을 강력히 추진해 왔습니다.
투르크메니스탄의 구루방굴리 베르디뮤카메도프 대통령은 카스피해 연안 천연가스관 공사 건설 합의로 다른 경로의 가스관 건설계획이 완전히 철회된 것은 아니라고 밝혔습니다.

The leaders of Russia, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan have agreed to build a new natural gas pipeline along the shore of the Caspian Sea.
The presidents of the three former Soviet countries announced the deal today (Saturday) at a summit in the city of Turkmenbashi.
Russia has been pushing for the coastal route for the pipeline over a rival U.S.-backed proposal to cross the Caspian Sea, bypassing Russian territory.
Turkmenistan's president (Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov) told reporters that today's agreement does not mean the other project has been completely dropped.
The three countries also issued a joint declaration today they will work with Uzbekistan to rebuild existing Soviet era pipelines as part of their plan to increase the export of gas from the Central Asian region.
The presidents at the summit (-Vladimir Putin of Russia, Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov of Turkmenistan and Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan -) say work on the new pipeline to Russia will begin next year.
