Security officials of six European countries have concluded a two-day security summit in Italy aimed at coordinating efforts to combat Islamic radicals and recruitment of terrorists in European Union countries.
European Union Freedom, Security and Justice Minister, Franco Frattini, told participants today (Saturday) that the European Commission is gathering information on radical Islamic preachers and their mosques throughout Europe. He said the information will be available to security organizations later this year.
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff joined interior ministers of Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Poland and Spain at the summit in Venice. He supports sharing airline passenger data for terrorism investigations.
Participants also discussed the need for increased dialog with Islamic communities within EU countries.
EU officials are expected to meet with leaders of various religious communities in Brussels next week.
