인도 동부 오리싸주에서 한국 포스코사의 현지인 직원 3명이 제철소 건설에 반대하는 현지 주민들에 의해 억류됐다고 인도 경찰이 11일 밝혔습니다.
경찰은 인질로 잡힌 3명의 직원 가운데 여직원 한명은 나중에 풀려났다고 말했습니다. 나머지 2명은 현재 고빈다푸르 마을에 억류돼 있습니다.
두 직원을 붙잡고 있는 주민들은 포스코측이 제철소를 건설하지 않겠다고 서면 약속할 때까지 인질들을 석방하지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다. 납치자들은 인도의 제철소 건설이 수천명의 주민들의 삶의 터전을 빼앗게 될 것이라고 말하고 있습니다.
포스코는 세계 5위의 철광석 매장량을 갖고 있는 오리싸 주에 오는 2020년까지 총 120억달러를 투입해 1,200만 톤 규모의 제철소를 건설할 계획입니다.

Police in eastern India say activists opposed to plans to build a steel company have kidnapped three employees of a South Korean steel firm.
Authorities say the three Indian employees were taken hostage in Orissa state. Officials say one of the three captives, a woman, was later released. The other two are being held in the village of Gobindapur.
One activist (Abhay Sahu) said the remaining hostages will not be freed until the company, Posco, offers a written promise to drop the construction plans. The kidnappers say the proposed Indian plant will displace thousands of villagers.
Posco's planned steel plant would be the single largest foreign direct investment in India, at 12 billion dollars.
Government officials in India are developing so-called Special Economic Zones that offer tax breaks to foreign industries. But land seizures in places such as West Bengal state have led to fatal clashes between villagers and authorities.
