미국 워싱턴에 소재한 아랍-미국연구소는 지난 1999년부터 서로 다른 문화 간의 이해 증진에 기여한 개인과 단체를 선정해 시상하고 있습니다. 이 상은 시인이자 철학자였던 칼릴 지브란의 이름을 따 ‘지브란 상’으로 불립니다. 칼릴 지브란은 1923년에 발표한 영적인 연작 시집 ‘예언자’로 잘 알려진 작가입니다. 또 인류애와 평등에의 열정을 갖고 있었고, 동서양의 철학을 아우를 줄 아는 작가로도 기억되고 있습니다. ‘미국의 소리 방송’ 기자가 올해 지브란 상 시상식을 취재했습니다.
지난달 워싱턴 DC에서 열린 지브란 상 시상식에서는 아랍-미국연구소의 헬렌 사만 이사장이 환영사를 했습니다. 사만 이사장은 지브란 상 제정 목적은 단순한 데 있다고 말했습니다.
인도주의와 관용을 전파하기 위해 노력하고, 또 서로 다른 인종 간의 협력을 추진한 사람들에게 아랍계 미국인들의 감사를 표하는 것이 상의 목적이라는 것입니다.
올해 지브란 상 개인부문 수상자로는 미국 워싱턴 대교구장인 테오도르 맥카릭 추기경이 선정됐습니다. 맥카릭 추기경은 미국 카톨릭계에서 인권과 사회정의와 관련해 가장 존경받는 인물 중 한 명입니다. 이 상은 캘리포니아주 출신인 민주당 다이앤느 파인스타인 상원의원이 전달했습니다.
파인스타인 의원은 “맥카릭 추기경은 진정 인도주의 분야의 상을 받을만한 분”이라면서 “과거 맥카릭 추기경과 함께 일하면서 인류에 대한 그의 사랑과 열정을 봤다”고 말했습니다. 파인스타인 의원은 또 맥카릭 추기경은 자신의 정열을 이민개혁과, 종교적 관용의 전파, 중동 평화 옹호에 쏟았다고 말했습니다.
맥카릭 추기경은 수상 연설을 통해 세계가 중동평화를 원한다면 과거 칼릴 지브란이 제안했던 것 처럼, 반드시 아랍과 이스라엘 간 갈등을 종식시켜야 한다고 말했습니다.
맥카릭 추기경은 자신은 전세계에서 평화와 정의를 위해 노력하는 많은 사람 중 한 명일 뿐이라면서, 사람들이 세계화합을 향한 평화와 정의를 위해 일하는 것을 보면 지브란 역시 매우 행복할 것이라고 말했습니다. 맥카릭 추기경은 지브랄은 스스로도 이런 활동을 했으며, 또 현재의 사람들에게 많은 영감을 줬다고 덧붙였습니다.
칼릴 지브란은 최고의 부자와 가장 가난한 사람 사이의 차이는 하루의 배고픔과 한 시간의 목마름일 뿐이라는 말을 남겼습니다. 올해 지브란 상의 국제활동 부문은 지난 50년 간 세계 최빈국들에서 구호활동을 펴온 미국 단체인 ‘글로벌 임팩트’에 돌아갔습니다. 수상은 디나 파월 전 미국 국무부 문화 담당 차관보가 맡았습니다.
파월 전 차관보는 글로벌 임팩트가 전세계 수십만명의 노동자들이 보낸 작은 정성을 모아 전세계 수백만명을 돕는 기적을 일궈냈다고 말했습니다. 이를 통해 매년 수많은 개인과 가정에 실질적인 변화를 불러일으키고 있다는 것입니다.
파월 전 차관보는 또 글로벌 임팩트는 지금까지 재난구호와 교육, 건강, 경제지원 활동 등을 통해 전세계 4억명을 도왔다고 덧붙였습니다. 글로벌 임팩트의 켄 섀너 이사는 수상 소감으로 지브란이 남긴 말을 인용했습니다. 인간의 중요성은 그가 현재 성취한 것이 아니라 앞으로 성취하려고 하는 데 있다는 것입니다.
섀너 이사는 전세계적으로 평화와 정의를 원하는 많은 사람들의 바람을 위해 일할 수 있었던 것은 글로벌 임팩트의 입장에서도 영광이었다고 말했습니다.
한편 올해 우수협회 부문은 비정부기구인 ‘서치 포 커먼 그라운드’에 돌아갔습니다. 이 기구는 아프리카와 유럽, 중동, 인도네시아, 미국 등지에서 분쟁해결을 위한 계획을 지원하고 있습니다. 상은 존 마크스 회장이 받았습니다.
마크스 회장은 ‘서치 포 커먼 그라운드’가 분쟁 해결을 위한 비영리단체로는 세계에서 가장 크다면서, 전세계 16개국에서 활동 중이라고 소개했습니다. 마크스 회장은 특히 중동을 예로 들면서, 자신들이 제작한 다큐멘터리 연재물은 역사상 처음으로 이스라엘과 팔레스타인, 아랍 위성방송에서 동시에 방영됐다고 말했습니다. 특히 대립하고 있는 사람들을 한 데 모으는 것이 단체의 특징이라고 소개했습니다.
한편 그동안 칼릴 지브란 상을 수상한 인물들 가운데는 레흐 바웬사 전 폴란드 대통령과 미국 권투선수 무하마드 알리, 영국 록가수인 스팅 등이 있습니다.
