A little-known Palestinian extremist groups says it kidnapped BBC journalist Alan Johnston and is demanding Britain release a radical Islamic cleric in return for his freedom.
The group, Jayash al-Islam -- or Army of Islam -- posted the claim today (Wednesday) in an audio recording on a Web site used by radical Islamists, including al-Qaida. The Web site also showed what appeared to be Johnston's identity card.
The group wants Britain to release Abu Qatada al Filistini, who is suspected of having links to al-Qaida, and other prisoners.
Palestinian Information Minister Mustapha Barghouti says efforts are continuing to secure Johnston's release after eight weeks of captivity.
Tuesday, British consul Richard Makepeace and Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, of the Islamic militant group Hamas, met in Gaza for a second round of talks on the case of the BBC reporter.
