한국과 유럽연합은 양측 간의 무역을 증진시키기 위해 자유무역협정 (FTA)협상에 들어갑니다.
한국의 김현종 통상교섭본부장과 피터 만델슨 EU 통상담당 집행위원은 6일 서울에서 회담한 뒤 FTA 협상출범을 선언했습니다.
두 사람은 양 측간의 자유무역협정은 오랫동안 계속되고 있는 세계 자유무역 협상논의에 타성을 줄 수 있을 것이라고 말했습니다.
양 측 대표단은 7일부터 서울에서 1차 협상에 들어갑니다.
27개국이 회원으로 가입하고 있는 EU는 지난해 중국에 이어 한국의 두번째 교역상대로 양측 간의 무역규모는 2006년 8백억 달러에 이르렀습니다.
한국의 김현종 통상교섭본부장은 앞으로 1년 내에 EU와의 자유무역협정을 체결할 수 있길 바란다고 말했습니다.
김현종 본부장은 EU와 자유무역협정을 체결할 경우 한국은 미국과 유럽을 잇는 동아시아 자유무역의 중심지가 될 것이라고 말했습니다.

South Korea and the European Union are beginning negotiations on a free trade agreement intended to boost bilateral trade.
South Korean Trade Minister Kim Hyun-chong and EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson made the announcement today (Sunday) after meeting in Seoul. The first round of official talks will begin Monday in the South Korean capital.
The two officials say a bilateral free trade agreement would give momentum to long-running talks on a global free trade deal.
The 27-member EU was South Korea's second-largest trading partner last year (after China). South Korean-EU trade totaled about 80 billion dollars in 2006.
South Korea's Kim says he hopes to conclude a free trade agreement with the EU within a year. He says a deal would help South Korea become a center for free trade in East Asia, linking the region to Europe and the United States.
