미국의 조지 부시 대통령은 5일 미국의 국회의원들은 미군이 전쟁에서 이기는데 필요한 자금과 신축성을 제공하는 것보다 더 중요한 책임은 없다고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 이날 토요 라디오방송을 통해 미군 철수시한을 담은 이라크 전비법안안에 거부권을 행사했던 지난 주일의 동정을 되돌아보며 이같이 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 이 전비법안이 미군 지휘관들이 실행 불가능한 조건을 붙이고, 전쟁과는 무관한 수십억달러의 지출을 포함하고 있다고 지적했습니다.
이에 대해 민주당의 척 슈머 상원의원은 부시 대통령의 거부권 행사가 이라크 주둔 미군을 전폭적으로 지원하고 이라크전쟁의 방향을 바꾸려는 민주당의 두가지 이라크 정책목표를 막지는 못할 것이라고 말했습니다.

President Bush says he believes U.S. elected officials have no higher responsibility than providing
the nation's military troops with the funding and flexibility during a time of war.
In his weekly Saturday radio address, Mr. Bush reviewed the events of the past week, in which he vetoed a funding bill that contained a timetable for withdrawal of troops from Iraq. He said the bill
imposed unworkable conditions on U.S. military commanders, and included billions of dollars in spending unrelated to the Iraq war.
Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer (of New York) said in the Democrats' response that the president's veto will not deter Democrats from achieving their two goals in Iraq: fully supporting the troops and changing the direction of the war. Schumer said the foremost goal of the United States should be counterterrorism.
