The U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan says 136 Taleban militants have been killed in two major battles in western Herat province in recent days.
A statement says 87 militants died in a 14-hour battle with coalition and Afghan troops Sunday in the Zerkoh Valley.
Officials say another 49 Taleban militants were killed on Friday in a firefight with U.S. and Afghan forces. One U.S. soldier was killed.
There has been no confirmation from the Taleban. The deaths would represent the group's worst losses this year.
The deaths outraged the local community. Hundreds of protesters stormed offices in nearby Shindand district, saying those killed were civilians.
Meanwhile, British-led forces have launched a major offensive against the Taleban in the southern province of Helmand, the hub of Afghanistan's booming illegal drug industry.
