An Ethiopian rebel group has released seven Chinese workers it seized during an attack on an oil-exploration field.
A spokesman for the Ogaden National Liberation Front says the group handed over the workers today (Sunday) to the International Committee of the Red Cross. Red Cross officials in Ethiopia confirmed the handover but declined to provide more details.
The London-based rebel spokesman (Abderahmane Mahdi) says two Africans captured during the raid were also released.
The rebels attacked the Chinese-run oilfield in eastern Ethiopia on Tuesday, killing nine Chinese and 65 Ethiopians.
The field is located in Ethiopia's Ogaden region, where the rebel ONLF has been fighting for regional independence since 1984.
The ONLF says it will not allow exploitation of the area's natural resources until the region is given the right to self-determination.
