부시 대통령은 이날 주례라디오방송에서 미국은 법이 존중되고 경제적 필요에 부합하는 이민제도가 필요하다고 밝히고, 새로운 이민제도는 또한 사람들을 품위있게 대우하며, 새로 이민오는 사람들이 미국 사회에 동화될 수 있도록 도와야 한다고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 앞서 이민제도 개혁들이 실패로 끝난 잘못에서 의회가 교훈을 얻어야 할 것이라고 말했습니다.
최근 부시 행정부는 국경지대에 순찰대를 증강 배치하고, 국경을 통한 밀입국을 줄이기 위해 새로운 이민개혁법안을 의회에 제출했습니다.

President Bush has urged U.S. lawmakers to work together to solve what he calls the "critical challenge" of comprehensive immigration reform.
In his weekly radio address today (Saturday), Mr. Bush said the country needs an immigration system that respects the law and meets the needs of the economy. He said the new system must also treat people with dignity and help newcomers assimilate into society.
But Mr. Bush said lawmakers must learn from mistakes that caused previous reforms to fail. He said his administration is working closely with members of Congress from both parties to enact reform that will help secure U.S. borders.
The Bush administration recently proposed an immigration plan that would deploy more border patrol agents and reduce the smuggling of humans across the border.
