미국 국방부는 27일 페르베즈 무샤라프 대통령 등 파키스탄 정부 요인 암살지시 혐의를 받고 있는 알-카에다 최고위 간부 가운데 한 사람인 아부드 알-하이드 알-이라키를 체포해 구금 중이라고 발표했습니다.
국방부는 이라크 출신의 알-이라키가 이라크에서 알-카에다 활동을 위해 잠입하려다가 체포됐다고 밝혔습니다. 국방부는 아부드 알-하이디의 체포시기와 장소를 밝히지 않았지만, 미국의 소리방송의 취재결과 그는 지난해 말에 구금된 것으로 밝혀졌습니다.
국방부는 아부드 알-하이디의 신병을 미국 중앙정보국으로부터 넘겨받아 현재 쿠바 관타나모 기지에 수감하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
국방부에 따르면, 아부드 알-하이디는 1990년대말부터 아프가니스탄에서 알-카에다 준군사조직의 사령관들 중의 한 명이었으며, 2002년부터 2004년 사이에는 파키스탄에서 활동하면서 국경을 넘어 아프간 주둔 연합군을 공격하는 한편, 무샤라프 파키스탄 대통령 암살 시도를 주도해온 것으로 알려졌습니다.

The U.S. Defense Department has announced it has taken custody of a high-ranking al-Qaida operative accused of directing plots to assassinate Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and others.
In a news release today (Friday), the Pentagon says the senior al-Qaida operative is Abd al-Haid al-Iraqi, an Iraqi who was trying to return to his native country to manage al-Qaida's affairs in Iraq when he was captured. The news release does not say when or where Abd al-Hadi was captured, but VOA has learned that he was taken into custody late last year.
The Pentagon says Abd al-Hadi was turned over by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, and that he is now being held at the U.S. detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
