A senior official in Afghanistan says Taleban insurgents have captured a district in southern Ghazni province, killing the top administrator, the local police chief and three policemen.
The deputy governor of Ghazni (Mohammad Kazim Allahyer) said Taleban fighters attacked Giru district late Thursday, triggering a fierce battle that continued for hours.
The official said authorities are preparing to retake the district, located about 170 kilometers southwest of Kabul.
Elsewhere, in the eastern province of Khost, a detective and his brother were killed today (Friday) by unidentified gunmen. Two suspects have been arrested.
And violence erupted earlier today (Friday) in western Herat province between NATO troops and Taleban insurgents. Several people were killed.
