유럽 천문학자들은 지구의 태양계 밖에서 생명체가 존재할 가능성이 높은 행성을 발견했다고 밝혔습니다.
이 행성은 지구로부터 20.5 광년 또는 193조 킬로미터 떨어진 천칭자리에 위치해 있고 지구와 환경이 비슷한 것으로 알려졌습니다. 이 행성은 지구의 5배 정도 크기로 천칭자리에 있는 흐릿한 적색왜성 ‘글리제 581’ 주위를 돌고 있습니다.
유럽남방천문대 연구팀은 이 행성은 표면 기온이 너무 덥거나 춥지 않을 정도의 거리에서 ‘글리제 581’ 주위를 돌고 있다고 말했습니다. 연구팀은 이 행성의 평균 기온은 섭씨 0도에서 40도 정도로 액체 상태의 물도 존재할 것으로 관측하고 있습니다.

European astronomers say they have discovered a planet outside Earth's solar system that could possibly support life.
The planet is located more than 20 light years -- or 193 trillion kilometers -- away from Earth in the constellation Libra. It is circling a red dwarf star, a tiny, low-energy star that gives off light 50 times dimmer than Earth's sun.
Astronomers believe the planet is orbiting the star at a safe distance that would keep it from being too hot or too cold on the surface. They think it has a temperature between zero and 40 degrees Celsius, which would allow water to exist in liquid form.
Most of the 200 or so other planets located outside Earth's solar system have been massive bodies that are uninhabitable because of their gaseous atmospheres.
