Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he plans to discuss North Korea's abduction of Japanese citizens with U.S. President George Bush during a visit to in Washington later this week.
Speaking in Tokyo with abductees' relatives today (Sunday), Mr. Abe reiterated his government's position that the issue needs to be resolved in cooperation with other countries.
North Korea has admitted to kidnapping 13 Japanese citizens the 1970s and 1980s, although Tokyo says more people were taken. Five abductees were allowed to return to Japan in 2002, and Pyongyang says the rest have died.
Tokyo says it will not contribute to a fuel aid package for North Korea until the kidnapping issue is resolved. The package is part of a six-nation deal reached last February aimed at closing North Korea's nuclear facilities.
Meanwhile, in Japan, japanese voters are casting ballots for two legislators in the Upper House of parliament, in by-elections considered a test of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's popularity.
