(Eng)

The first overseas voting has begun in the French presidential election on the tiny island territories of St. Pierre and Miquelon off Canada's east coast.

Some five-thousand voters in the Atlantic Ocean archipelago are eligible to cast ballots today (Saturday), one day before voting begins in France.

Voting also will take place today (Saturday) on the Caribbean islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe, and in French Polynesia in the southern Pacific Ocean.

There are about one million eligible French overseas voters.

French officials decided to begin balloting a day early to compensate for time differences between overseas territories and the French mainland.

Voters are choosing among 12 candidates, with conservative Nicolas Sarkozy and Socialist Segolene Royal as front-runners.
